This past Tuesday, May 14, the previous Group Commander, Cadet Pedro Barreto, switched places with Cadet Sebastian Cavichiolo. Cadet Korbyn Reynolds took Cadet Erika Wetmore’s place as the Deputy Group Commander. The ceremony took place in the cadet’s third periods, with a few parents spectating the change of command. The leaders will determine what changes are made to the unit for it to be as spectacular as it can be. Good luck!
Hard work and commitment payoff, literally! Cadet Minh Le and Cadet Shian-An Chiou have both received scholarships. The Type 7 scholarship pays full college tuition with a stipend to pay for books and living costs. After he graduates, Cadet Le plans to join the Air Force to become a fighter pilot.
On Friday, May 3, cadets volunteered to help out Dillard Street Elementary School with their family dance. The set up included drinks, cupcakes, and other delicious foods. Our cadets helped string lights and made goodie bags. Once the preparation was complete the cadets chose to dance with the little kids. Everyone was laughing and having a great time! We look forward to helping them in with future dances.

On Saturday, April 20, cadets from West Orange, Ocoee, and Dr. Phillips High School all got together to commemorate the horrors that happened on April 9, 1942. The memorial 14 walk/ run took place on the West Orange trail, cadets started off at Ocoee High School, they then walked to Oakland, and back to Ocoee. The instructors, along the trail, had water stations and snacks for those in need. Many cadets teamed up with other schools, not only make new friends, but to challenge each other and finish it as a team. We are looking forward to having new schools and cadets run and walk this with us next year.
On Saturday, April 6th 2019, approximately 30 cadets from West Orange High School Air Force JROTC attended Lakeland's inspiring Sun n' Fun Airshow. FL-802 personally invited eighth graders interested in becoming apart of the unit. Upon arrival at the school, everyone was split into separate groups with at least one chaperone. After a 45 minute bus ride, each group parted their separate ways, they all got to see different types of helicopters, planes, and vehicles such as Black Hawk’s, a B-17, and F-35’s. They had the opportunity to experience thrilling simulations, showing what it would be like to be flying high in the air. Participants made new friends and exciting memories. We hope to have many more people attending in the years to come!
April 5th 2019, cadets were excused from their fifth, sixth, and seventh periods for the annual field day. Cadets were put through challenges that required mental and physical strength. Each squadron had to work together and trust each other to to get through each task. The exercises consisted of physical training, sports, team bonding, and a drill sequence that was put together by each class to be marched on field day. Each squadron came together and chose their shirt and flag design, chants, and the team name. After the seniors that put together field day calculated all the scores from each squadron, they came to the conclusion that Charlie squadron, or third period, had done the best overall. Golf squadron, or seventh period, won the spirit award, which means that they always had their heads up and fought to the very last second. In the years to come, our next seniors will get the opportunity to plan the field day. Can’t wait to see what they come up with!
April 2nd 2019, selected Cadets who have shown outstanding performance in the unit were awarded various awards. Many national awards and ribbons which were handed out. A national award is unique because one person must meet certain requirements. Award night is a huge tradition in the military because it gives us a chance to recognize our overachievers.
Cadets were able to march in the Downtown Orlando Martin Luther King parade on early (date) morning. Not only did they earn their activities ribbons but they also had a chance to make new friends and meet new people, but most importantly they made many more memories. Most of the cadets that attended this parade stated that “This was a super fun way to make new friends and it was a great opportunity to see all the different teams and groups that march in the parades” they also stated that they would most likely march in the upcoming parades!
