This past Tuesday, May 14, the previous Group Commander, Cadet Pedro Barreto, switched places with Cadet Sebastian Cavichiolo. Cadet Korbyn Reynolds took Cadet Erika Wetmore’s place as the Deputy Group Commander. The ceremony took place in the cadet’s third periods, with a few parents spectating the change of command. The leaders will determine what changes are made to the unit for it to be as spectacular as it can be. Good luck!
Hard work and commitment payoff, literally! Cadet Minh Le and Cadet Shian-An Chiou have both received scholarships. Cadet Chiou received the Air Force JROTC Flight Academy, Chief of Staff Private Pilot Scholarship, worth over $25,000. Cadet Chiou will attend flight school over the summer to earn his private pilot’s license, and earning 5 college credits in the process. Cadet Chiou is 1 in 150 students selected for this unique experience and we wish him the best on his journey to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Awarded a Type 7 USAF ROTC scholarship, Cadet Le is planning to attend the University of Central Florida with Air Force ROTC. The Type 7 scholarship pays full college tuition with a stipend to pay for books and living costs. After he graduates, Cadet Le plans to join the Air Force to become a fighter pilot.
On Friday, May 3, cadets volunteered to help out Dillard Street Elementary School with their family dance. The set up included drinks, cupcakes, and other delicious foods. Our cadets helped string lights and made goodie bags. Once the preparation was complete the cadets chose to dance with the little kids. Everyone was laughing and having a great time! We look forward to helping them in with future dances.
The Air Force Junior ROTC instructors and cadets of West Orange High School in Winter Garden, FL earned an overall unit assessment score of “Exceeds Standards”…the highest rating attainable…during their evaluation on 19-Apr-2019 and have been designated a Distinguished Unit with Merit! Maj Matthew C. Medlock, Lt Col Brian J. Noe, SMSgt Shonda L. Spencer, created a dynamic and supportive learning environment coupled with an excellent community outreach accumulating over 1,800 hours of community service this year. The instructors provided outstanding leadership in administering the cadet centered citizenship program. The West Orange High School cadets performed exceptionally well and took great pride in leading and accomplishing their unit goals. The West Orange High School Air Force ROTC citizenship program is making a positive impact on the cadets, the school and the community.
