On the 21st of April, 2018, the units of West Orange High and Ocoee High teamed up to participate in the Bataan Death March. This march is held to honor the thousands of American and Filipino troops that had to make a 65-mile march to prisoner camps after the U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula to the Japanese. The cadets met at Ocoee High to start the march, being given the option to walk or run. They started off on the trail and, even though the original march was 65 miles, the cadets only did 14 miles. There was a huge turnout of cadets that were up for the challenge, and they completed it for a good reason. The two units hope to do this again next year and all of the years to come.
On Saturday, April 14th, 2018, FL-802 went to the 44th annual Lakeland Sun N Fun Airshow. At the airshow, cadets got to see various types of aircraft. Cadets were even allowed to go into some of the aircraft and sit in the pilot’s seat. The Air Force brought out a simulation that highlighted what different jobs in the branch did and what it’s like to be out in the environment. The experience as a whole was incredible and the unit hopes to be able to participate in this and similar events again in the future.
On Saturday, April 7th, 2018, the FL-802 unit hosted Keene’s Crossing at West Orange High School. The elementary school was holding a competition where the kids had to build a Rube Goldberg machine. These machines are a really complex way to do a simple task, like dropping a ball into a cup. The kids that showed up from the elementary school really enjoyed the event and were excited to show off their machines. West Orange and the unit look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.
